A good friend of mine has herpes, type 2.
Some boys will not go down on her because of this. She understands their trepidation, but is frustrated because of the actual statistics.
So my question is, would you gents go down on a lady with this STD if she wasn't having an outbreak and had never passed it to anyone (through oral or vaginal sex)?
Does the word Herpes freak you out? Would you walk away from a girl you like because of it?

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 6:02 AMI'm not sure what kinds of preventive devices are available now for oral sex, but failing the presence of such things, the answers would have to be:
would you gents go down on a lady with this STD if she wasn't having an outbreak and had never passed it to anyone (through oral or vaginal sex)? no
Does the word Herpes freak you out? no
Would you walk away from a girl you like because of it? "like", yes, "love" no. -

Re: Our dirty world.............
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 8:25 AMI know a couple that has been married for over 10 years with two children. He has genital herpes and she still doesn't. Everything can be worked out just fine with the proper precautions.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 10:18 AMTo my knowledge (this is coming from medical professionals), you cannot pass genital herpes to someone's mouth. You can, however pass oral herpes to someone's genitals. It's a different strain.
You can pass herpes to another's genitals when they are not having an outbreak although this is less likely than when they do. -

Might want to have a chat with those "medical professionals" A LOT of doctors don't know jack about STDs. Herpes and HPV are the two they tend to be the worst about because unless they're a specialist they never treat them and rarely test for them so they know jack and squat about them -

Which is why, when I walk into a doctors office I ask for 'full panel" testing".... They do know what that means!!

Um, no. Fuck no. You think the above means squat? If she has it, she has it, regardless of her transmission 'track record' (or lack thereof).
"Does the word Herpes freak you out?"
No. It's a medical diagnosis with a very specific means of transport, two of which you listed above. Thusly, it's a deterrent (and often a disqualifier) to those of us uninterested in acquiring that STD.
"Would you walk away from a girl you like because of it?"
No.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 2:09 PMThis thread demonstrates the ongoing lack of general information regarding this virus.
Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can manifest in either oral or genital location, each can be transmitted in either direction by oro-genital contact, and the viruses are present even if there are no lesions or symptoms.
As a "medical professional" I would have to say unless a couple is commitedly fluid-bonded and willing to take the risk that this is a valid concern for anyone who does not wish to contract it. -

Re: Our dirty world.............
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 8:14 PMAbout fucking time someone with the credentials others 'post' to their argument actually takes the time to put the truth out there, as it is.
That's the fact, Jack. Don't try to minimize or 'soften' it to maximize your own romantic agendas.
Thank you, Ian, for validating (wouldn't have been necessary if serious individuals had done the research) the above.

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 8:34 PMWould you gents go down on a lady with this STD if she wasn't having an outbreak and had never passed it to anyone (through oral or vaginal sex)? No, this or any STD.
Does the word Herpes freak you out? Does AIDS freak me out. No, but I won't be starting any relationship with them.
Would you walk away from a girl you like because of it? Walk away or start a relationship? Wouldn't have got off the ground in the first place.
One more question if I may - Would you have unprotected sex with someone you loved if that person had unprotected sex with someone else (assume you don't know the 'history' of that someone else) ? -

Did I miss the post where someone was trying to do this or was this a general statement?

Wed, July 9, 2008 - 2:18 PMYou're right Kole. I should slit my throat now for misleading so many people. I'm sure 5000 new people have herpes because of me.

It's the type of dangerous 'lightened-up' misinformation that fucks people over time and time again. Damn right I'll get bent each and every time I hear more pacifying falsehoods about a condition that many people -already- don't know enough about.
Don't expect a chuckle or an apology; the whimsically shocked attitude you have regarding my response to this subject matter tells me enough.
Cheers.

Wed, July 9, 2008 - 6:06 PMI'm really disappointed because I really thought you would laugh or apologize....
I guess you missed the part where I said "To my knowledge". I also never claimed to be a medical professional myself. Others with info chimed in and it all worked out. Thank goodness.
You should thank me for giving you yet another opportunity to display your superiority. I know how much you love it.
The bottom line is, if I have misinformation, others must as well. After all, we don;t all know everything that's important to know and if I hadn't spoken up, I would continue to have misinformation and so might others. This is how people learn.

l'm not a medical professional per se, but l did two years of massage school. Thanks for clearing that up.
Now, would l go down on someone with herpes? No. l'm poly as well, and like Simon, l just hate dental dams. l honestly don't know if l'd have a relationship with someone who did, mainly for that reason; l can't imagine what the rejection must feel like for someone with herpes, but l can't take that risk, for me or those l'm with. lt really sucks for all parties, but that's how it is.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Wed, July 9, 2008 - 12:45 PMWould I go down on someone with Herpes, outbreak or no, the answer is NO. Yes one can use a dental dam or condom but it isn't 100%, what is?, and quite frankly using a dental dam is rather blech for me. I tried it once, I dont care to eat rubber or silicone, I like the skin contact and taste.
Would I walk away from a girl I like with Herpes, I have in the past and at present yes I would. I am poly and fluid bonded, the last thing, very last thing I want to do is to play with someone and then not only catch something but pass it on to my partner(s).

Re: Our dirty world.............
Wed, July 9, 2008 - 3:38 PM1 in 4 women have some form of Herpes. Many don't know that they have it.
If you have slept with 4 women in your life...you have probably been with a women that has Herpes.
The odds go up with the more venereal diseases you add in.
Fearful of all that?
There are 2 solutions...abstinence or "safe sex".

Re: Our dirty world.............
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 6:26 PM"1 in 4 women have some form of Herpes."
That's a projected statistic, which means it's a guesstimate. The actual clinical numbers don't reflect that.
It should also be noted that roughly 80% of individuals infected with Herpes are asymptomatic and can only potentially spread the infection for a short period of time once or twice a year IF they experience viral shedding. These individuals will have no signs whatsoever that they have herpes. They won't know unless they get themselves tested and the Herpes test is not (for some ridiculous reason) included in the standard battery of STD tests. -
-
Re: Our dirty world.............
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 6:28 PMAh, furthermore it should also be noted that most standard "safe sex" practices DO NOT protect against Herpes. Using condoms might lower your chances for infection somewhat but Herpes affects the entire genital area and condoms just flat don't protect against that. If you are truly worried about Herpes about all you can do is digital sex (fingers), mutual masturbation, and using toys. Otherwise you are not protected. -
-
Re: Our dirty world.............
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 9:06 PMI understand that digital sex(fingers) leaves you exposed unless you used gloves. Sluffing off infected skin cells with Herpes can infect you when it comes into contact with any part of your body. This what makes condoms so ineffective in protecting you from Herpes. If any part of you comes in contact with the lesion...or the sluffing off cells... then you could become infected. -
-
Re: Our dirty world.............
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 9:49 PMThe risk with digital sex is that of crosscontamination (that you might touch your mouth or genitals). If you wash you hands afterward then so long as there aren't any gaping wounds on your hands (eww) you're good to go.

Because it is less accurate than a polygraph test.

Depends where you live on that one.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 4:22 PMPlanned Parenthood doesn't include it in their standard battery. None of my colleges included it, nor would their insurance cove it (though they did cover other STD tests). No clinic I've ever been to included the Herpes test unless that was a focus for the clinic in question. Everywhere I have lived you have to request it.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 4:39 PMI'm not downplaying the statistics Betcha. 1 out of 4 is NOT a statistic. It's a projection. It may be true, it may not. 1 out of 4 folks are NOT diagnosed w/ Herpes but, due to the possibly asymptomatic nature of the disease, they suspect that's how many carry it. I don't want folks to be lax but I don't want them more scared than they need to be either.
There are also three different KINDS of tests for Herpes (DNA, antibody, and culture) all of which have their plusses and minuses. I would advise asking for the antibody test.

Re: Our dirty world.............
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 11:09 PMI wouldn't for one primary reason. I'm in a polyamorous relationship. I am personally responsible for the sexual health of not just me and a partner, but the others we play with as well. Because of that I have to be particularly careful of who I play with so I don't spread it to more than just me.
