Long or short?

Okay... I'll admit it right off... This is superficial to most... But a lot of women tie their feminine identities into their hair... I am one of them... But there is always time for change, and I am about ready to part with the So. Cal. Barbie image for good... I figure in preparation for my permanent move to SF I would go blazing red, short and spiky or totally black and gothic... What do you think?? Just kidding... (It's almost Halloween and I am amped up on too much candy... Sorry...) Really just something more touchable... But...

I've been wondering... When it comes to hair on a woman... What do guys actually prefer? What brings up the mental picture of independent, or strong, or quirky, or cute... Or hot, or sexy? When is it too long? Or too short? Or just too...?

Definitely short hair, *with* the exception if you have actually have the dynamite tresses that I've seen on some Jewish women, lush, thick, layered, and flowing.

I associate long hair with girls, and when I see it on a woman, I think that she doesn't want to mature. Very long hair is a warning sign...

Interesting Aristos as it is mostly my male friends that have kept me from cutting mine that past two years! And I am very much a woman not a girl...although I may fall into your other category of jewish women as I am half and it is the russian red I got although it runs on the Irish side also...

Blazing red and long, long, long. I love long hair on women, to look at, stroke, brush and occassionally ~ depending on the woman's likes, grab as a mane during wild sex (is there any other kind of sex?)

Whatever you do don't cut it short.

*btw red is my favorite color for hair ;)

When a lady friend cuts or dyes her hair I usually ask- "Looks nice. Boyfriend break-up with you or are you breaking up with him?" to which they always reply "oh no I just thought I'd dye/ cut it a little.
Extremely long hair - (like repunzel and shit) IMHO is the poster child for the independent woman. She embraces femeninity without parting with it like many women do. I was all about the short hair until I met "repunzel"- dark, independent & sexy as all hell- I think it tugs at something primal.
shaved your head?----ok I get it- your so independent you have defied the system by stripping your self of all feminine qualities
down to the shoulders...provides a sense of professionalism that may or may not exist
spikes or something creative? I can dig it
regular length (down to the back)....too normal

    Short!
Long hair is very mundane. While I have certainly been in love with, and have lusted after women with long hair. I find that I'm much more initially attracted to someone with a creative short hair style. I like women who stand out in a crowd (being tall helps also), and have a sense of individuality.

I'm with Simon: I like long hair! All what he said and I like braiding it too. And I like the feel of that hair running down my skin.

But, yeah, it is superficial isn't it? So I'd never stand in the way of a short hair style. I so get the practical side of taking care of short hair. I have to admit that until I started getting thin on top I kept my hair fairly long. But the short cut I wear now is easier to take care of!

So I can adjust my feelings a bit when required -- that short hair has a fiesty image.

Bald is too short. I really like shoulder to mid-back length. I worry about the logistics of really long hair. I like to get tangled up in embraces and I hate the thought of ripping out chunks of hair by a misplaced elbow or knee or whatever.

      EGADS!!!! NO!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!!

Geeminy... - what is it that when a woman decides they have a "need to try something new" the 1st thing they go and do is lop off their hair? - and then fret and whine afterwards that they did it. (perhaps not all woman, - but I've seen this happen TOO many times to remember..)

Long hair is simply gorgeous, unless it's not taken care of... - now there may be a few fellas on here that think otherwise, - but I betcha if you took it to the streets you'd find an overall preference for the long-locks. Not that the short look might not be becoming to some ladies, - but hey...

But if one's hair would be considered so low on the mattering scale, - then wouldn't clothing need to be considered "superficial" as well, - why do the style and fad thing and not just buy the most practical and easy-to-care-for deal there too? Why.. - I bet a nice pair of brownish elastic double-knit trousers and a matching pull-over should suffice perfectly then. Simple to care for, never wears out, won't show the dirt, no fasteners to break or wear out, and who really cares what ones' seen in when it's the person that matters the most?

      ;-)

It strictly depends on the woman. Height, complexion, bone structure, personality all play a factor in whether long or shot hair looks most attractive on a particular woman.

<< I associate long hair with girls, and when I see it on a woman, I think that she doesn't want to mature. Very long hair is a warning sign...>>

That's interesting, Aristos.... I'm not all pissed off or anything about yr answer; you just gave yr honest opinion- & I feel strongly about hair too, so I get that part. I do wanna respond to the part about long hair being seen as a sign of immaturity, & the best way, would be to tell why I wear it long.

I'm one of those Jewish women, w/ a lot of soft, wavy hair. Those plentiful, it's not super-thick, & seems to be at it's best cut w/ a touch of
soft layering to the lower middle of back, just above waist-length. I dislike having it cut, & adore the goddess who cuts it now- makes it look good, & move well, w/o having that "just-cut" look. (I bring her wine). I got a bad trim last spring, when I rushed to get it trimmed elsewhere it before leaving for a trip, & I felt like I was in alien hair for weeks. That always feels like someone rubbed my fur the wrong way, & it's stuck...Shoulda trimmed the bangs myself, dammit....I did cut it myself for years. When I want it out of my way, I braid it, or just put it back, or up. There are times I really don't care how I look., like in the garden, or studio.

If it were thicker, I'd likely grow it to my butt. It's naturally as black as hair gets on caucasians.... though now slowly becoming streaked w/ silver. My Mom's hair was black, straight & thick; she wore it very long till her early 50's, when she cut it to her shoulders.. & shorter but full, in her 60's. My Dad loved her hair. People complimented her on it all the time. I was proud that my Mom was so natural, compared to so many other laquered women of the 60's. She only got a 'do' for really special ocassions.

Besides, showing our flowing tresses can also be a sign of freedom for many women....
There's a story in my family, which all the elders swear is true.... My Great-Grandma Adele (a VERY strong, smart lady) made the journey from Poland w/ 3 small children, & little help from Great Grandpa Barney. He'd immigrated to NY several years earlier, & had taken up w/ a red-headed floozy. (Sorry, redhead friends- that's what Grandma always said). When Adele first saw the Statue of Libertty, in NY Harbor, she tore off the wig all traditional married Ashkenazi Jewish women wore, & flung it into the water. "I'm an American now- I'm never wearing that shmata again!" she shouted. And she never did. After clearing Ellis Island, she was picked up by a relative who took her to Brooklyn. She found the redheaded floozy at Barney's flat... w/ the kids looking on, Adele picked up a broom, brandished it like a weapon, started yelling in several languages, & chased that woman out of the apartment. She settled down to life w/ her husband, & they had 3 more children. She eventually became the 1st woman to head her civic association, & hundreds of people came to her funeral.

You ever talk to Rastas about the "why" of dreads? It's sorta like that.... It's my fur. It's a visceral, natural-feeling way I express the wild in me. It makes me feel more linked to all the long-tressed women before me. I'm also Wiccan, & this is another way I connect to the old spirit of the Greenman, the mermaids, Gaia....
My hair feels like a plant growing out of my head; it also feels animal.... it holds scent, it moves in the wind, it caresses my skin, & that of my lovers. I can draw it like a curtain, around my face, which appeals to my 12th house Piscean desire to feel more hidden at times. I can also attract attention w/ it when I choose, decorating it w/ sparkly stuff, making it appear even longer w/ colorful extensions- theater... Men notice & enjoy my hair; when a lover brushes or plays w/ it, it, I melt.

I've loved long hair all my life; on all genders.....the way it frames & softens features, especially on a masculine man; I find the contrast is very, very sexy. I'm a strong, hopefully somewhat mature woman, who prefers the company of other strong women, & men. I think I was over a desire for preciousness by about age 10.

So, long hair may not be yr preference... but does this help you to understand that there are many reasons why a woman might choose to wear it long, for reasons that have nothing to do w/ misguided attempts at girlishness? I always tell my true biological age- 47.

it is interesting to read about the meaning that people give other people's hair, isn't it?

personally, i think hair is a very very powerful thing -- and with waist-length dreads, i mean that on a lot of different levels (though i'm not rasta, and my hair really is "just hair" -- but in the same way that my wardrobe is "just clothes" -- special, unique, and a way that i express who i am in the world... but i could live without it if i need to)

and i would hazard a guess that many of these opinions (like "short hair is for independent women" or "long hair means someone is not mature") come from personal experiences with one, or maybe a two, people -- so it's a conclusion that really just doesn't apply everywhere.

the thing i dont' like about women's hair is when you get the feeling that their hair dominates their life -- too much upkeep, too much vanity, too much self-involvement about it. hair is never a substitute for real substance.

but really -- you should do what you want with your hair -- and when you want a change, there are few things as fun and easy as making a change with your hari. blazing red short spiky hair? sounds totally hot to me -- if it makes you feel hot when you do it... because really, just like clothing, it's more about how something makes you feel than how someone else thinks it looks... and best of all is when your hair looks like you and no one else.

"Looks nice. Boyfriend break-up with you or are you breaking up with him?"

Good call... Yes... Sort of... (We're on a "break", though I don't know what that means... And I have just entered into a new relationship... With ME...) Also, I am in a new place with a personal trainer and learning martial arts... Kind of trying new things all around. (I guess I am just looking to shake things up a bit...)

I have always worn my hair by the place I was in, rather than the person I was with... Long and Barbie for SD... Braids for the Catskills... Pigtails and Anime Buns for SF... And I have been just about every "natural" shade there is... Blond, Red, Auburn, Brown, Black... A new color about every three weeks for the past decade (or longer...)

I was thinking about cutting somewhere between 6"-10"... That leaves me quite a bit longer than a lot of women... But I'm not sure... I have not been really short since I was in Jr High and mistaken for a little boy (really late bloomer)... I have two brothers, one loves extremely short hair, the other likes it totally uncut... So I never really asked anyone before... I just figured the rest of the male world fell in between the two extremes... (And since I'll be in SF at the start of the year full time... Really anything goes... But that is one of the best parts of the city... I just don't want to have my appearance screaming out So Cal transplant anymore...)

I think it's called Locks of Love. They rock. I think your hair must be dye-free, but I'm not sure about that.

Wigs for Kids takes hair that is 8" min... But die free... So that's out...
Locks of Love is 12" min... Also die free... so again out...

And my hair is already layered so even if it were die free, I would not make it... They start measuring at the shortest hair in the ponytail. (My best friend is a hair dresser and said as much as she would love to support either of the charities, there is no way she'll take my hair to the scalp... And no way I could have the courage to do that...) But that was a great idea...

I'm not positive, but I think it has to do with the strength/ health of the hair - I don't think they take permed or chemically straightened hair either.

even if it's not usable for a wig, wigs for kids used to take it - they sold the unusable donations to pharmaceutical companies for testing... I'd say check their website.

The notion that long hair is 'this' or short hair is 'that' is a fairly primordial reaction that is based on evolutionary sensors from our cellular/genetic memory. It's not something to rally against, and it's not even necessarily societally-based. Research some anthropological studies and you'll recognize it goes far beyond a modernized interpretation of hair styles.

Last winter I met a man that was obsessed with my hair. ONe night we laid on the couch watching the Matrix and he brushed my hair for the whole movie. It was one of the most sensual experiences of my life. He says if I cut my hair he would feel the energy shift half across the country and begged me not to.
My hair means alot and yet nothing. I cut it once when I turned 30 and people did not recognize me when they passed me on the street. That was when I realized how much I was identified by it and it felt totally different without the "mask". Immediately my friends made comments on my neck or eyes and how they had never noticed how nice my other features were before...I embraced the change and got more self confident but grew it back when I started dancing so as to feel the movement of my head more...and yes there is a primordial goddess reaction involved also as I feel more a part of nature with it long and it feels great to float in a body of water and have it spread out and wrapped around me like red seaweed. I change the way I wear it all of the time but find it is alot easier than short hair and requires no maintenance or trips to the hairdresser monthly so it is also cheaper. My grandmother had hair down to her waist and wore it in two braids wrapper around her head like a crown, she was Russian, and I loved to braid it when I was young and as soon as mine was long enough she braided mine. I am now an expert braider of all sorts and my friends are always asking me to do their hair. So it is social and hereditery also...
so for now it stays long but I make no promises this winter if I feel I need to shapeshift! And the red is natural so that has never changed although I would love to try on being blond for a week it will never happen!

My sister-in-law just brought me a photo of a hairstyle that is tons of layers about the face and is well below the shoulders... Seems like it might be the perfect compromise. I'll still get the change I was looking for, and keep the illusion of length that it seems guys find feminine and/or sexy... Also can do more creative things with it, which is also what I was picking up on...

As for the redhead becoming a blond... I am naturally a deep dark auburn red. going blond was a three month process. And while I had always wanted to try it, since "gentlemen prefer blonds" thanks to Clairol ads in the 40's and the ultimate sex symbol, Marilyn... It was sooo much work. might I suggest a wig?

Hey... What do guys think about wigs??

On men...it depends-on some guys long hair is the shitz! Nothing sexier than a parter with long locks that brush against ya. Then again, on some guys short is awesome too...for grabbing whilest one rams your hips...*er*

On women, oh man I love women w/ long hair. Mid back is my fav; for burying my face in it, playing, or stroking it softly. Some women look awesome with short wild hair. I myself have wild tight curls all over the place.
