When is weird too weird?

And, what does weird mean to you?
And are the points of view you have around "weird" even your own points of view? If not, how weird is that?

Just being provocative here...come on. play...

I enjoy weird. Weird is something interesting, unusual, illogical or just strange. I think everyone has something weird about them, and it is usually one of the most interesting things about them. I try to get to know people's weird sides, and I don't try to hide mine at all. Too weird is when they try to force their weirdness on to you, or when their weirdness causes violence or harm.

One woman I know is both a devout catholic and a santeria priestess. Her discourses on her religious concepts are surpassingly weird, to me, but often interesting and always colorful. But she is a good friend and a person with a good heart.

My own weirdness is that I continue to believe in the counter-cultural values of the late 60's - you know, peace and love and all that. How weird is that?

That's because one cannot be a Christian and a witch, so of course it's weird. The Bible specifically prohibits it.

Wow.... where'd the bigotry come from ali?
You do realize that there are LOTS of Christian scriptures that were not included in the Bible, that the meaning of the word "with" in the bible is hotly contested as the original word meant "one who poisons the community well," and that a lot of people would NOT consider a Santeria priestess a witch, right? There are many Christian witches, just as there are many different branches of Christianity that debate certain bits of dogma so there are those who believe that witchcraft and Christianity are not at all mutually exclusive. Did not Solomon consult a witch when he needed wisdom? So, yes, there are witches who follow the words of Christ, you know, the New Testament.... that stuff that was supposed to free ya'll from the religious restrictions and perils of the Jewish Old Testament.

Actually that is not all that weird. Doesn't Santeria come from Spanish santería or "holiness" or Latin sanctus meaning "sacred". All very Catholic to me :)

Nonetheless each to their own...weird to one person may be perfectly normal to another.

Um, it's my understanding that santeria is almost the definition of syncretic religion, where a people take on most of the trappings of an established relion, layered over their initial, indigenous religion. The way I learned it in school santeria is basically just Catholicism expressed in the language of the indigenous people, drawing parallels between Ctaholic saints and rituals and their own gods and rituals. From wiki:

Syncretism in Caribbean religions and cultures

The process of syncretism in the Caribbean region often forms a part of cultural creolization. (The technical term "Creole" may apply to anyone (regardless of race or ethnicity) born and raised in the region.) The shared histories of the Caribbean islands include long periods of European Imperialism (mainly by Spain, France, and the United Kingdom) and the importation of African slaves (primarily from Central and Western Africa). The influences of each of the above interacted in varying degrees on the islands, producing the fabric of society that exists today in the Caribbean.

The Rastafari movement, founded in Jamaica, syncretizes vigorously, mixing elements from the Bible, Marcus Garvey's Pan Africanism movement, and Caribbean culture.

Another highly syncretic religion of the area, voodoo, combines elements of Western African, native Caribbean, and Christian (especially Roman Catholic) beliefs.

        Other modern syncretic religions

Recently-developed religious systems that exhibit marked syncretism include the New World religions Candomblé, Vodou, and Santería, which analogize various Yorùbá and other African gods to the Roman Catholic saints. However, the Catholic Church condemns such syncretism. Some sects of Candomblé have incorporated also Native American gods, and Umbanda combined African deities with Kardecist spiritualism.

Weird is too weird when it doesn't jibe with my weird, and I suspect this may be true for everybody.
I would also note that weird for the sake of weird can quickly get old. It is often just a prima donna in a clown suit.

It was too weird when, on our first date, my lady dumped a jumbo-size box of Milk-Duds into the container of popcorn that we were sharing!

"You got your milk duds in my popcorn!"
"You got your popcorn on my milk duds!"
      Hey! We like it!!"

Hahaha......that IS pretty weird. But I can appreciate that kind of weird.
Had she opened a vein and started bloodletting into your popcorn, I'd advise you to run, and run very fast, or, if you just happen to be a vampire, grab ahold and don't let her go! LOL

Things that are too weird for The Craw:

    • Anything that pierces my skin without my permission
    • Anything that involves country music and does not involve immediately changing it (i.e: line dancing, for one)
    • Two Girls One Cup. Not only too weird, just too disgusting.
    • My face in the mirror on acid
    • My face appearing before me, but no mirror is present. That's probably the acid.
    • Nonsensical ravings caused by extreme mind alteration, when I am not experiencing the same alterations
    • Anyone praising Microsoft as an innovator is just too fucking weird for me. Be quiet, and go do your research.
    • When I am not having sex, some of the things I do when I AM having sex seem pretty weird to me. Please check back again when I am having sex.
    • The word "weird" does not follow the "i before e, except after c" rule, and that is pretty fucking weird.
