Of course there is a difference between wants and needs. I might be hungry and want a hot fudge sundae but what my body really needs is some protein. Last night something was said to me about wants and needs. I guess what I think I want turns out to not be what I needed. This was driven home to me this week on more than one occasion, often having to do with things of a sexual nature.
What I want (need!) to know is what are your thoughts on this. What have you wanted only to find out you did not need it? How have you figured out what it is that you need? How have your needs changed over time? Is it easy to communicate what you need to those you love, or is communicating what you want easier?
Thanks!

Fri, June 13, 2008 - 9:35 PMThis is the kind of thing I should probably sit down and map out sometime.
Because it would take a while, and a few trips down memory lane, to put something coherent together.
off hand, I'm not sure exactly how or why my attitudes about "wants" v. "needs" have changed or evolved over time.
As far as what sort of things feed the soul, I note that it is a question of timing sometimes.
That hot fudge sundae may not be the ticket when your body needs protein, but when the time is right you can appreciate that culinary marvel, and the miracle of your senses interacting with it, that the world would produce such things, etc....
And then,"... to the hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet...", as it says in the ol' bible.
When I was younger, I perhaps didn't know as much what it was that I did want, so I searched somewhat blindly and made mistakes. Also, I may not have always been able to appreciate subtler things back then.
But, these are all just random thoughts. I guess I'll have to consider it more. -

I have to agree with you S. A... my views of wants and needs have changed and are still changing. And sometimes what seems like a want, turns out to really be a need. The hot fudge sundae sometimes is such a sensory experience that it is very fulfilling, how can this not be fulfilling a need?
